Crossbar placement

I paid the outrageous amount of money for the OEM crossbars. That being said, I understand the placement of the front crossbar. It needs to have clearance for the sunroof to open. The second crossbar is to be placed 27.5" behind the front. It does not say anything about that placement being adjustable. It seems pretty much written in stone that it has to be 27.5".

Does that make sense to anyone? Could there be a structural reason as to why they don't give a range within it can be placed instead of an exact position? I'm asking because the cargo box I want to mount is made for 24" spacing. My gut tells me I would be fine moving them closer but I thought I should ask before I end up with a catastrophic failure.

there must some structural reason, so i think it is best to avoid doing something that i against the instructions. Its better to play safe than regret later.

My Thule cargo box says to put crossbars as far apart as possible for stability.

Yeah it will require space since the more space the more stable it will as already mentioned, but I think it would do just fine
