Let's face it. The tablets on the Carnival are absolute garbage. If they ran just like a normal Android tablet they'd be far more useful. Opening this thread for explorations into this subject if anyone else is fumbling with similar ideas.
Someone else started a similar thread a while back. You'll have to search the Xda-Forums to find any real solutions to root these devices and hope there's a community of Kia Carnival owners there who are also well versed in modding android. Kind of a long shot IMO.

Maybe try to track down the specific brand/model number of the tablet being used and see if it is used anywhere else in xda to get more engagement?

How bad is it?I have an sx on order and was not expecting much. I don’t like to give my kids too much screen time so maybe it’s not a bad thing. Are screens removable?
They're bad for casting any content from your phone (very hit or miss), but as long as you have them connected to wifi, the pre-loaded apps work well enough to stream content.

And yes - the screens are very easily removed. There's a thread on this forum about it with step by step instructions.

It’s a shame really. There is so much potential in this set up. The funny thing is that I bought a travel dock for the Nintendo switch. And that works amazing. Unfortunately the screen resolution isn’t very good. My son doesn’t seem to mind.

I have tried this but I get a 1 sec lag on the main screen and almost a 2 second lag on the mirror screen. Do you get a lag?

Hey everyone, I actually just successfully “rooted” mine. The RES tablets have wireless ADB open on the usual port 5555. They run android 4.4.2 so you have to use older versions of some apps, but via adb on a computer on the same network, you can install a regular launcher and bypass the terrible interface. While still retaining full functionality. As pictured here you can also install Kodi V.16. Please let me know if you have any questions, although I can’t really give a full tutorial.

I may write a tutorial later but for now all I have time for is a quick run down.

You will need adb on your computer, the RSE and your computer to be on the same hotspot / wifi network. Also you will need an apk file for whatever launcher I used nova launcher from here. Nova Launcher 5.5.4 (noarch) (Android 4.1+) APK Download by TeslaCoil Software - APKMirror

On your computer you will want to type “adb connect <IP_OF_RSE_TABLET>” then “adb devices”. Once you confirm the connection you type “adb install <apk_path>” afterwards if you hit the home button on the rse display there should be two options, hit nova launcher then always and from there you can install or access whatever you need.

Nice work! I'm shocked (and disappointed) the OS is as old as KitKat, but that certainly explains why it has so many problems. Most popular apps require at least Android 5.0 to function while others need at least Android 7.0. Even with wireless adb access, the ancient OS turns me off from going through the effort to run a 3rd party launcher.

Have you tried installing a custom ROM? Though, I guess there aren't any designed for this hardware.

Thanks! It actually works really well with kodi but no I have not tried yet, custom Roms need to be developed per device so it’s theoretically possible but I don’t have the skills to do so.

The Netflix version on these tablets, does it support downloads?
It does not support Netflix downloads due to the internal storage amount I think. (That version supports it on another device.) I use PlayOn to record from Netflix and built a wireless Jellyfin media server that works with the web browser app.
