I've used my key fob to start the vehicle remotely a few times this past weekend and while loading the kids into the back, the Carnival would sometimes shut off as I walked from one side of the car to the other. I know there is a 10 minute timeout programmed into the start sequence, but I'm nowhere near that 10 minute mark when the car turns off. I haven't seen anything in the manual that explains this, so I'm going someone here may know why this happens or how to prevent it?

The remote start only works when the door is locked.
If you open the door to pick up your child, it will be a different mode from the 10-minute sequence.

When the driver's door is opened, another safety sequence mode will work. Depending on the setting (30/60 minutes), vehicle will be shut off after certain period of time when the door opens. Perhaps this is safety feature for the case which CO2 levels rise when maintaining idle in closed spaces.

Could it also be proximity based? I'm thinking the car senses my key fob "leaving" the vehicle as I walk from one side to the other. Then it shuts off as a safety precaution.

No it's not. I have remote start on my other vehicles and it does that if you open the door right away. Not really sure why.
SO unless I jump into the driver's seat and shift into gear immediately, the car is going to shut off if any other doors are opened first?

It still seems random and inconsistent when it occurs. Some times it lets me load the kids (takes a couple minutes) and then I hop in and drive away without issue. Other times, it cuts off the moment I close the passenger door or walk to the other side (even with the door open). I may need to play with it some more to see if I can find a pattern.

I haven't played with it in the Carnival so I can't say for sure but I know my other car does this. I bought the remote start at Best Buy.

I am highly interested in the fix to this. Bought a carnival last week this issue drives me crazy. We have had remote starts that did not do this. The primary purpose we use remote start is to start the car and have it cool off while loading kids. If I wanted to jump in the driver seat and start the car I would not need a remote start.

I think I've figured out why it shuts off so soon after opening the doors. If I unlock the car using the key fob or the button on the door handle, the car remains running, but if I use the key fob to open (not unlock) the sliding doors or lift gate, then the car seems to programmed to kill the engine once the car is actually unlocked either by the fob or door handle.

So, in order to ensure the car doesn't shut off prematurely, I've started to unlock the car before sending any commands to open the doors.

So, this wasn't right either... I now think the car is sensing the key FOB in my pocket entering the vehicle as I load my kids into the car seats, but once I close the door and walk to the other side to do the 2nd kid or get into the car, the car seems to shut off then. I assume the car thinks I have walked away from the vehicle and left the car running so it shuts down for protection. Too bad the manual doesn't seem to call out this behavior.

Alright... FINALLY figured it out for real this time. If any door is opened after remote starting, you have about 30 seconds for the key fob to enter the vehicle. If the car does not sense the key fob enter the vehicle within that window, then the car will shut down. SO, I now have to throw my key fob into the front seat while loading the kids in the back to ensure the car keeps running.

Thanks for figuring this out! Is it just the FOB that was used to start the car, or can any FOB be in the car to keep it from shutting off? If it's the latter that makes it easier to just have the wife or I throw either FOB into the car.
