Sad to report as my first post to this forum but had my 2 yo son’s fingers smashed in the door today.
Was getting wipes out of the drivers side to wipe his hands off and as I was walking around the vehicle he managed to open the door with the button and hit it a second time to close it and before I could get to him his hand was trapped. Getting x-rays now and hoping it’s nothing serious but Kia needs to give the option to not let the doors open with the button press. What a disaster of an option when you can easily pull the handle

I haven't tried it yet, but I know this vehicle has child locks. Maybe try utilizing that so that your child can't open the sliding doors from the inside.

I hope your son is doing ok and has a speedy recovery, all the best!

Sorry to hear about your kid getting hurt. I hope he is okay. I am about 60% sure that option to disable the door button exists - check you manual to be sure.

I am 100% sure you can completely disable the electronic door completely so you have to slide it old school style, but that's even less safe than the electrically assisted feature.

I jumped on this page before knowing there was any concern. When we got home tonight I stupidly tried to beat the door closing to grab a bag that was on the floor of the van; the door closed on me hip-level and instead of the sensors tripping and the door opening back up, it REPEATEDLY tried to close itself around my flailing mama body. It was a lot of pressure and at first i kind of laughed then realized I’m not sure this dumb door is going to open and had to make my kid use the door handle. I have a special needs daughter and this freaks me out now. All the responses about “regular doors aren’t safe” “back in my day” tonight my Kia REPEATEDLY tried to close around my not-frail body. Unless you grew up with some sadistic siblings I don’t think a door slams more than once. I’m definitely emailing our dealership about this.

Something went incredibly wrong here. The door shouldn't even have the programmed ability to close, sense an obstruction, open, and then repeat. Definitely talk to your dealer and bring a duffle bag full of towels to simulate your body being in the door's path. Good luck!

If this was said earlier, forgive me, but I want everyone to understand there are no lasers or sensors to detect objects in the door's path. The door only stops if enough resistance is applied to the door to overpower the actuator.

Fake numbers, but for example, If the actuator needs to apply 50 lbs of force to get the door moving, then you need to apply at least 51 lbs of resistive force to stop it.

We just bought a Carnival this week and stumbled upon this thread after we bought the car. Did anyone here reach out to Kia/dealership and get a response back? I reached out to my dealership and asked them about it. They said this is the first time they heard about this issue. I would be interested to know if any of you got a response on this as this would be a safety concern for anyone with kids.

Also, do you know if the competition (Honda/Toyota/Chrysler) has sensors on the sliding doors that prevent it from closing if an obstacle is detected? The Carnival sliding doors feel like the old school elevator doors that didn't have any sensors.

I saw on one of the Carnival FB groups someone posted about the sliding doors closing on a kid and not stopping automatically.

Has this happened to anyone? Is this a problem? Sounds like a big safety issue.

I thought the sliding doors have sensors like the tailgate door. We're getting close to purchasing, but this is obviously concerning with little kids.

Thanks!

We recently rented one for two weeks while on vacation, coincidentally it's a car were interested in purchasing so if was like an extended test drive. The door was my only complaint, I sat there countless times testing it out with my own body and it never stopped. It drove great! I had zero complaints, but the door is a major hazourd. It can severely injure a child.

I ran some admittedly unscientific tests before I saw this thread after I saw the door almost close on my 4 year old. My concerns are what brought me here.

I was not as daring as some of you. I put myself, a 170lb man, in the way of the door. It just kept pushing me, and it was not until I pushed back with some heavy resistance, much more than a toddler would give, that the door retracted. I then tried just putting my forearm in the door, near the front jamb. I’m pretty sure it would have closed on me had I not pulled it out at the last second.

Yeah, the door is quite heavy, so you've really gotta be intentional if you try to stop it manually.

Crushed my 2 year olds fingers. Pos car.
There sliding door safety sensors don’t work. My 2 year old got his fingers crushed. I googled it and it looks like a lot of other people had the same issue. Is Kia going to recall this? This is a major safety issue. It should detect an obstruction and reverse.
Complain to NHTSA, they have an open investigation and requested a bunch of information from KIA, though it seems like there has not been much activity. You can see that information by searching for "PE22-004" here: https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=%20

Someone did complain to NHTSA and Kia replaced their force sensors and now it actually doesn't harm fingers - they even took a video (on youtube here). And here is another user's video

It's in the Facebook Kia Carnival Family of Owners group. Here is the original post on reporting the issue to NHTSA.

Anyone whose sensors are not as good as these two owner's videos, please complain to NHTSA and dealers, and feel free to show them a video of how well it can work.

Sorry your kid got hurt, but there’s nothing to recall. Read about how the doors function, understand how their resistance detectors work (won’t recognize a small finger, or any finger even, at the point of closing), then use them appropriately and make sure everyone treats large pieces of motorized moving metal with respect and responsibility.

From what I’ve seen the last few years, there is a shocking lack of personal responsibility or accountability for actions. Don’t close doors if someone is in the way. Make sure little ones or frail elderly understand to stay out of the way until the door is fully open or fully closed. If you can’t trust anyone in your family to understand this, then turn off the power doors and use them the good old fashioned way.
While I certainly agree about personal responsibility, there is clearly a large range in variability of how well the existing solution works.

Thanks for sharing this. That is significantly less pressure than my doors require. Any small twig gets crushed by mine. Something I'll have to discuss with the service department the next time we go.
