Telluride Converts from Utah

My wife Shelby and I have been shopping for a Telluride for six months or so. We noticed in our area Tellurides went from being very rare to everywhere you look in just a short time. We still like the Telluride but we never ordered one so the wait was just too long for my wife. We tested out a Carnival and my wife loved it so we committed to buying one over the phone from Billings, Montana, 550 miles away (we live in Utah - mini van country so there were no Carnivals available and everything coming in to the dealerships was claimed). We flew out the next morning, spent an hour at the dealership, and drove it home all in the same day.

I prefer going out of state to buy vehicles anyway, we just wish we had more time for site seeing. It seems to be easier to find dealerships without mark-ups as soon as you get out of Utah. So the drive home was through Bozeman, around Yellowstone, and past Island Park, just a nice scenic drive.

The dealership had 3 vans in Astra Blue with Tuscan Umber, all SX Prestige trim which my wife liked the best anyway so that worked out. We had the dealership remove any excess fees or add-ons which weren't on the sticker which included a paint protector and interior upholstery protector and darker tint (the windows already have a good tint). The dealership was awesome, genuine, and super easy to work with. So we paid MSRP and a doc fee which left us with a nice clean contract.

On the drive home the dealership called to ask if we had recommended them to another Utahn because they just had another phone sale from Utah, their 3rd in a week.

Glad to see there is a community forming here and I'm happy to answer any questions.

Utah doesn't have sales tax? What about the license and reg fees?
Congrats on the new car, and the fantastic deal!

Could you provide some quick tips on how you negotiated out any excess fees or add-ons? With the limited supply/high-demand, I know dealers around here will be pushing the same crap with a take it or leave it attitude.

I thought you already bought one? Any non-mandatory fees can be taken out. Doc fees can be negotiable. License + reg fees aren't negotiable.

Thanks!

I think that you just need to be prepared to be firm and walk if you don't like the price. I asked about additional costs above MSRP and they began describing their expensive coatings. I told them that was a deal killer and after a quick talk with the manager they took it off. If they would have said "no" that's no big deal, I just would have found another dealership.

I feel there might be some benefit to flying out to buy a car. You can get somewhere more rural where demand is lower or head to a volume dealership. I think a dealership feels special when you fly out. It's an easy sell for them and they feel "Big Time" like they're turning into a destination dealership. Those guys up in Billings even picked us up in our new van from the airport 20 minutes away and were excited to have us there.

I previously purchased a Jeep Rubicon from a volume dealer in the Pheonix area. Prices were $5,000 lower than the dealerships where I live and they treated me awesome because I took the extra effort to fly out.

Good luck with your search!

Just got mine same as yours yesterday, don’t like red at first but when I saw it in person, I am literally in love. Nevertheless, I have a question if you don’t mind. Did you perform a 1k mile oil change?

Is it recommended to do one at 1k miles? I don't see it anywhere on the manual?

I had to do some internet searches on this. I couldn’t see anything about this specific van needing an early oil change. As far as I can tell it’s just a personal preference that some people do when breaking in an engine. If anyone has any other thoughts on this I’d be interested to know as we’ll be coming up on 1,000 miles soon.
Just follow the manual for scheduled service. Anything above that unnecessary.
My wife and I also wanted the Telluride. But that took too long so we opted for the Carnival. We ordered the AstroBlue with Orange. But he sales rep came back and said that wasn't available right now. HUH? We had to go with our 2nd choice, which wasn't too bad. It was the Panthera Metal with grey interior. We had grey cars before, which is why we opted for the blue Carnival. It looks good. Oh well. Now we have to wait for another month or two for delivery.

Hey Ogden Mike, JB from Ogden as well. Just ordered an Astra Blue EX from Stones KIA in Idaho Falls. Very easy over the phone without all the Utah dealer mark-ups and mandatory dealer options. Let me know how you like the MPV in Panthera. That was my initial choice but opted for the astra blue w/grey interior. No kids. Looking to explore and camp with this vehicle. My Tacoma with a bed tent worked for awhile, but getting too old to set it up and tear it down any time I wanted to move. Hope all is well!
