At first we felt the same that they were a waste. However, our kids love the captain's chairs and they are really useful for long drives as they fully recline and allow the kids to sleep.
Sounds like your kids are not in car seats like the OP.

If you have kids in car seats and will continue to be in car seats for a few years, then captains chairs may not make sense - especially if you need to access the 3rd row with any regularity. For us, we are a family of 4 using the 8 seater Carnival with 2 kids in car seats. When grandma comes to visit, an adult can sit between the 2 car seats in the 2nd row without having to crawl to the 3rd row. It just seems more convenient than captains chairs for the foreseeable future.

We have one in a car seat, one in a booster, and the other is out of a booster now. I agree that being in a car seat (non booster) can make the captain's chairs less enticing but depending on how long you keep the vehicle it could pay off in the end.
